Frequently asked questions about Codebreaker Master
Can a color appear more than once in the code?
On Easy and Intermediate, never: each color appears at most once in the code. On Hard, a color can appear up to 2 times, and up to 3 times on Extreme. Your guesses, however, can repeat a color on every level.
What does an empty hint slot mean?
A peg in your guess earned neither "correct position" nor "wrong position." Either its color isn't in the code, or the code contains fewer pegs of that color than your guess: each peg in the code is counted only once. The hints never tell you which peg it is.
Can you submit an incomplete row?
Yes, as soon as one peg is placed, except on the last row, which must be complete. An empty slot earns no hint, and an incomplete row can't win. It uses up a row, just like a complete guess.
How many secret codes are possible?
Easy: 360 codes; Intermediate: 6,720; Hard: 430,920; Extreme: 9,727,200. These numbers account for the level's colors and the maximum number of repeats allowed in the code. They are calculated from the app's engine, then recalculated by a second, independent program.
How does Last Chance mode work?
All rows except the last are already filled with randomly generated guesses, along with their real hints. You have just one guess, on a complete row: you must deduce the code from those rows. In the example on the site, at Intermediate level, only one code remains possible.
What does a Custom game allow?
You choose the format yourself: 3 to 8 pegs, 4 to 8 colors, and 4 to 30 rows. The Duplicates setting allows a color to appear up to 2 times in the code; it is required when there are more pegs than colors. The format you choose is kept for your next games.
What does the Random Challenge offer?
A game with a randomly drawn format: 4 to 7 pegs, 6 to 8 colors, and 8 to 30 rows. When there are more pegs than colors, the code necessarily repeats colors; otherwise, repeats are sometimes allowed.
